Reaching Teachers: Helping Them Teach State and Local History is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #186 by Elise Schebler Dawson explains how the State Historical Society of Iowa reaches out to teachers and meets their curriculum needs. She overviews the marketing tools employed by the society, such as a school tour brochure and teacher newsletter. The society connects with local and state education offices and professional education organizations in order to network with teachers and determine their needs. After conducting surveys with teachers, the society examined the curriculum of schools in Iowa and built programs around the state standards by creating pre-visit materials, a bibliography of materials related to local history, traveling artifact trunks, and in-service day programs focused on teaching with artifacts. Dawson shows how these efforts improved programming at the society for both teachers and students.
