How to Plan and Implement Interpretation is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #262 by Stephen Hague provides tips for planning interpretation, emphasizing a holistic approach that incorporates every person involved with the institution, from director to board members to volunteers. Creating engaging interpretation can be a challenge for many museums and historic sites. Hague organizes planning and implementing effective interpretation into seven steps: commit to good interpretation, know your audience, develop focused interpretative themes, create a written plan, train frontline staff, implement interpretation, evaluate and revise. Also included are suggestions for creating a budget to implement better interpretation and planning for the cost of new supplies.
