SDSHRAB Basics of Archives Management - (October 2025) - Virtual Workshop
- Registration Closed
Workshop Description
This is a private workshop sponsored by the South Dakota State Historical Records Advisory Board.
The AASLH Basics of Archives Management Half-Day Workshop provides an overview of the basic concepts and strategies for successful archives management. It is designed for individuals working in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural heritage organizations who have little or no experience with managing archival collections. The emphasis is on policies, procedures, and best practices for maintaining archival records in traditional physical formats such as documents and photographs, but other non-textual materials and digital archives will also be considered.
Through a combination of instructor-led discussions and breakout group assignments, this session aims to give participants actionable guidance on moving their archives programs and projects forward with confidence.
After completing the Basics of Archives Management workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify and articulate the primary activities and practices leading to effective management of multi-format and multimedia archives.
- Devise strategies and actions aimed at gaining intellectual and physical control of archival collections to advance preservation and use.
- Comprehend and adapt the standard instruments and tools used by organizations to administer archival holdings.
- Locate and evaluate resources that will be useful in collections management and further developing professional archives skills.
AASLH workshops include presentations from the facilitator and in-depth discussions with other participants from around the country who are facing similar issues and opportunities in their work. This workshop is not recorded, so do plan to take notes.
