Live Webinar: StoryCorps DIY: Recording the Stories of Your Community

Since 2003, StoryCorps has given thousands of people across the country the opportunity to record interviews about their lives, pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and leave a legacy for the future. These powerful, often emotional, stories illuminate our shared humanity. With the support of a project grant from IMLS, StoryCorps has created a set of online resources titled StoryCorps DIY, to support libraries, museums and archives in recording and preserving the histories and experiences of their communities.  

During this webinar, participants will be introduced to StoryCorps’ methodology and explore the many topics covered in StoryCorps DIY including: Starting Interview Collections Programs; Recording Interviews Ethically and with Consent; and Using the StoryCorps App. Participants will be given ample time for questions.

Speakers:

Perri Chinalai is the Director of StoryCorps' Community Training Department. She came to StoryCorps in 2008 with a background in the arts. At StoryCorps, Perri has spearheaded the development of trainings to support wide-ranging partners in their use of tools and methods to launch local interview collection programs. 

Maria Santiago is an archivist of oral histories at StoryCorps and an independent oral historian. She has received training in oral history ethics and methodology from the U.C. Berkeley Oral History Center Advanced Summer Institute and Suzanne Snider’s Oral History Summer School. Her independent practice focuses on cross-cultural oral histories, many with survivors of state-and ethnically-sanctioned violence. As an archivist she’s interested in the intersection of oral history, metadata, and technology; ethics; and project design. Maria has been with StoryCorps in various capacities since 2016; her prior work experience includes work on the Brooklyn Historical Society’s Voices of a Generation collection; and on Dr. Dan Royles’ African American AIDS Activism Oral History Project. She received her MLIS in archives from Pratt in May 2018. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
