Webinar Description
As the importance of learning more about African American history has grown over the last decade, the popularity and knowledge of Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, has spread widely and rapidly throughout the United States. Amber Mitchell, Director of Education at the Whitney Plantation, will discuss how your organization can join in the celebration in ways that are appropriate and respectful to the history of African Americans from slavery to modern interpretations, and elevating to the communities you are trying to reach all year-round.

STEPS Standard
This webinar will help organizations enrolled in STEPS* address Interpretation Standard 6 (New Workbook): The institution asserts its public service role and places education at the center of that role.
*Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.

Whitney Plantation
Amber N. Mitchell is the Director of Education at the Whitney Plantation, a memorial site in South Louisiana that is exclusively dedicated to interpreting slavery. She strives to tell the stories of underrepresented peoples in cultural institutions and lower barriers to uplift and support museum workers of color, and by extension, making these institutions more accessible to all people.

Cancellations made prior to the early-bird registration deadline date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
