Workshop Description

The AASLH Basics of Archives Management virtual workshop provides an overview of the basic concepts and strategies for successful archives management. It is designed for individuals working or volunteering in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural heritage organizations who have little or no experience with managing archival collections like documents, photographs, and digital material, but who find themselves charged with caring for and preserving these items at a basic level. This workshop is especially focused on establishing and maintaining manageable archive protocols at smaller organizations with modest budgets and minimal staff time.

If you need a "quick start" to assess the state of your archives, decide on taking the more intensive 8-week AASLH archives course, or build confidence in beginning or continuing a project, this workshop is for you.

This workshop offers an accessible overview of managing archives for the non-professional archivist and a review of outside resources and guides to consult for more in-depth information as needed. The emphasis is on policies, procedures, and best practices for maintaining archival records in traditional physical formats such as documents and photographs, but other non-textual materials and digital archives will also be considered.

Through a combination of instructor presentation, open discussion of attendee case studies and concerns, and Q&A and brainstorming, this session aims to give participants actionable guidance on moving their archives programs and projects forward with confidence.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the Basics of Archives Management workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and articulate the primary activities and practices leading to effective management of multi-format and multimedia archives.
  • Devise strategies and actions aimed at gaining intellectual and physical control of archival collections to ensure preservation and use in your community.
  • Comprehend and adapt the standard instruments and tools used by organizations to administer archival holdings to your specific circumstances and resources.
  • Locate and evaluate resources that will be useful in collections management and further developing professional archives skills  so you can continue learning as you work.

AASLH workshops include presentations from the facilitator and in-depth discussions with other participants from around the country who are facing similar issues and opportunities in their work. This workshop is not recorded, so do plan to take notes.
