About this Webinar

Are you curious if there is anything your organization can do to educate about climate changes over time? Is there a record that the climate in your area is shifting over time? Join Doctors Sam White and Roger Turner for an informative webinar on this topic that will last around one hour. Sam White will address how local history museums can contribute to solving the climate crisis. Roger Turner will share examples of local weather observations (a National Weather Service cooperative observer record and a couple of unusual weather diaries) and the utility of these sources to help understand how climate has changed over time. Both will share how museums can engage and educate visitors about weather and the climate crisis and will address strategies museums can use to interpret these local records.

Learning Outcomes

During this webinar, we will discuss

· Identify local evidence of weather and climate.

· Discuss strategies for interpreting local evidence and connecting it to national and global patterns.

· Engage young and minoritized groups in history and STEM lessons.

· Discuss how scientists use historical records to understand climate change.

After this webinar, attendees should be able to:

· Describe how historical weather observations are used in contemporary climate science

· Recognize diverse kinds of local records relevant to weather and climate history

· Weigh opportunities and risks of using historical items and examples to discuss climate change impacts and adaptation

Unfortunately, we can't cover all topics in an hour-long webinar. We will not be discussing:

· The reality of climate change

· How the Earth’s climate system works

· Specific methods in paleoclimatology or historical climatology

Connecting the Content

This 60-minute webinar will especially help organizations enrolled in STEPS address multiple standards under the Interpretation and Stewardship of Collections sections of the STEPS programs.

The Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.

Target Audience

Everyone is always welcome to attend an AASLH webinar, but this webinar might be especially useful for staff/docents of house museums, historic sites, parks, and any institution interested in doing more with climate and weather history.
