Webinar Description

From large museums to small historical societies and beyond, sites where staff and volunteers preserve and interpret history have a responsibility to maintain safe workplaces. A safe workplace needs more than a detailed employee handbook; it requires prioritizing personnel safety in your organizational polices, budget, and culture. 

Drawing on the work of the AASLH and NCPH Gender Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Task Force, this webinar will provide recommendations and practical takeaways for improving workplace culture and protecting co-workers as well as the organization. Attendees will leave with a detailed template to use in writing their own Staff Safety Plan and resources to turn to for further information. Connecting the Content

This webinar will especially help organizations enrolled in STEPS address multiple standards under the Management section of the STEPS program.

The Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) from AASLH is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.

Bethany Hawkins

Bethany Hawkins was named Chief of Operations for AASLH in April 2016. She joined AASLH in 2005 in the role of Program Manager working primarily with the association’s continuing education programs, annual meeting, awards program, and affinity groups. Before joining AASLH, she worked as Director of Marketing for the Lane Motor Museum in Nashville and was Executive Director of the Sam Davis Home and Museum in Smyrna, TN. A life-long Tennessee resident, Bethany has both a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Master of Arts in Public History from Middle Tennessee State University.
