About this Webinar

Digital archiving and long-term preservation shouldn’t be a luxury reserved for large, well-resourced institutions. This free webinar will introduce participants to the Permanent Legacy Foundation and their Byte4Byte storage grant program designed to support grassroots historical, cultural, and collective memory archiving initiatives and organizations. Byte4Byte offers grants for organizations doing this work that can include free digital storage and internship stipends to help them reach their preservation goals. We’ll cover several case studies, highlighting small to mid-sized historical organizations that have successfully used Permanent.org and the resources from this grant program to make their digital collections more accessible to their communities.

About the grant program: Through Byte4Byte storage grants for nonprofit partners across the United States, Permanent ensures future generations have access to the diverse and vibrant legacies of past and present individuals, organizations, and movements in their communities. Storage grants are available to United States nonprofit organizations with 501(c)3 tax-exempt status which includes, but is not limited to, public institutions of higher education, state and local governmental agencies, cultural heritage organizations, and Native American tribal governments or organizations. Permanent especially encourages applications from organizations working on disaster relief efforts in their communities or at large; organizations engaging in pilot work, including first time digitization/digital preservation efforts, public archives and exhibitions, and community-driven programs; and organizations and/or collections that represent and uplift under-represented communities and narratives.

Learning Outcomes

As as result of this webinar, participants will:

  • Assess how Permanent.org’s platform and preservation model align with the needs of small to mid-sized historical organizations working with limited resources.
  • Learn if applying for the Byte4Byte grant program would be a fit for their organization and projects.
  • Apply lessons from real-world case studies to plan or enhance a digital stewardship strategy for their own collections.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage the Byte4Byte storage grant program to increase public access to cultural memory projects.

Connecting the Content

This webinar will especially help organizations enrolled in STEPS address multiple standards under the Stewardship of Collections section of the STEPS program.

The Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) from AASLH is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.
