Webinar Description
How can we use our exhibitions to engage our local communities? How or should exhibitions examine and reinterpret the stories that our institution tells? In this webinar, attendees will join curator Gwen Whiting as she shares experiences from exhibitions developed on topics ranging from transgender history to the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. In this webinar, we will discuss how WSHS developed these topics and exhibitions, while exploring ideas for working with your local communities to bring history to life.
Learning Outcomes
- Attendees will discuss how to create a space of shared authority for community groups within exhibition content and interpretation.
- Attendees will discuss ways of addressing sensitive and difficult topics using exhibition content.

*Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.

Washington State Historical Society
Gwen Whiting is the Lead Curator at the Washington State Historical Society. She holds a Master of Arts in Military History from Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. The exhibitions that Gwen has curated for the Historical Society include Unlocking McNeil’s Past: The Prison, The Place, The People, Remembrance [about the incarceration of Japanese Americans in World War II], and Crossing Boundaries: Portraits of a Transgender West. Prior to her tenure as Lead Curator, Whiting worked as a museum educator for over a decade, receiving numerous honors for her work in facilitated field trip programming and the online student publication COLUMBIAKids.
