Brooke Salvanto, Executive Director, Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum, invites you to be brought along by the momentum of chaos and opportunity.
Originally debuted at the Small Museum Association Annual Conference in February 2019 and fine-tuned during the AASLH Annual Meeting's Small Museums Affinity Community Luncheon in Philadelphia in August 2019, “How to Spot Opportunity When it is Disguised as Chaos (at a Small Museum)” could have been called “How to survive a lightning strike at 2am to the Visitor Center right after you recover from the most damage to any cultural institution at the Jersey Shore following Super Storm Sandy” but the latter seemed like overkill. Internally, we call this presentation Chaos and Opportunity. The Seaport has mindfully built a workplace culture that embraces change and welcomes the opportunity to fail. What choice did we really have? For us, chaos and opportunity are inextricably tied together. It has been said: When you cannot control the direction of the wind, adjust your sails. The art of adjusting our sails readily has transformed this grassroots museum into a community center strategically focused on cultural sustainability.
This webinar will welcome active participation as we all share how we have leveraged the unexpected. Participants will hear examples and ideas of how Tuckerton Seaport has turned chaos into opportunity by taking part in an interactive developed by Brooke called Cards of Chaos. Those attending the webinar will find inspiration in how to create their own opportunities out of unforeseen events all while working on limited budgets and with few staff.

Small Museums Affinity Community
The AASLH Small Museums Affinity Community assists America’s small museums in their endeavors, helping to make them stronger and more responsive to their communities. The Committee encourages small museums to share successful strategies in workshops and national meetings and demonstrate what the field can learn from small museums. Through its programming and initiatives, AASLH plans to strengthen the small museum, an important steward of local and national history.
Executive Director, Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum
Brooke Ashley Lynn Salvanto enthusiastically serves as Executive Director of the Tuckerton Seaport & Baymen’s Museum, located at the center of the Jersey Shore and visited by 58,000 guests annually. In 2011, Brooke arrived at the Seaport armed with a Master’s Degree in American History from Monmouth University as well as experience at other nonprofit education venues, such as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. With feet firmly planted in the sand of the Jersey Shore, Brooke is a lifelong resident of South Jersey. Prior to her Seaport employment, Brooke worked as the Development Director at Surflight Theatre on Long Beach Island. Currently, Brooke serves on the Board of the Small Museum Association and the Ocean County Tourism Advisory Council. Brooke received the Young Altruistic Professional Award from the United Way of Ocean County in 2014 for her community efforts following Superstorm Sandy. Brooke graduated from the American Association for State and Local History’s Developing History Leaders Seminar in History Administration program in Indianapolis in 2014 and also holds a Certificate in Nonprofit Management. Most recently, Brooke has presented at the SMA Annual Conference and AASSLH’s Annual Conference on How to Spot Opportunity When It’s Disguised as Chaos at a Small Museum. She firmly believes: “In the midst of chaos, there is also opportunity.”
Cancellation/Refunds for onsite workshops must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the early-bird registration deadline date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
Cancellations/Refunds for online continuing education (webinars and online courses) must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the start date for the online course or the day of the webinar will be given a full refund. No refund will be given after the start date for the online course or on/after the day of the webinar. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person. Registrations cannot be transferred between courses or course sessions. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
