Webinar Description

Makerspaces offer an engaging, hands-on way for the public to interact with history. In this session, you'll explore the transformative potential of makerspaces within museums and historic sites, discovering how interactive environments can enhance visitor engagement, spark creativity, and deepen connections to history and culture.

Tim Betz, author of Making History: Makerspaces for Museums and Historic Sites, will provide real-world examples and practical guidance on designing and implementing makerspaces that complement existing exhibits and collections. By embracing the Maker Movement ethos, museums can come to life in new, dynamic ways.

Participants will gain insights into integrating makerspace activities that appeal to diverse audiences and foster collaboration, learning, and exploration. Whether your institution is large or small, this webinar will equip you with tools to start or refine a makerspace, offering fresh and engaging experiences for all visitors.

Registrants for this webinar will also receive a 30% discount code for Tim's book, Making History: Makerspaces for Museums and Historic Sites.

Learning Outcomes

During this webinar, participants will learn:

● What a makerspace is and how museums can use them

● How to get started, from a big budget to no budget at all!

● How to engage the public with hands-on projects

● What it means to learn historic trades and crafts as intangible cultural heritage

While we try to be as thorough with topics as possible, one webinar cannot cover every aspect of a topic. As such, this webinar will not discuss:

● The history of the maker movement

● How to advertise and market a makerspace at your site

● Sustaining a makerspace: safety plans, sustainability, or budgets

Connecting the Content

This webinar will especially help organizations enrolled in STEPS address multiple standards under the Interpretation section of the STEPS program.

The Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) from AASLH is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.
