Workshop Description

Participants in this four-week, online workshop will learn how to craft onsite, outreach, and virtual programming that is meaningful for the current needs of the educational community. Employing a flipped classroom model, participants will engage with presentations, readings, videos, and discussion boards which will prepare them for meaningful virtual conversations with their peers and the facilitators in the workshop. By the end of the workshop participants will be able to recognize the basics of learning theory and educational program design for both in-person and virtual programming; will have identified ways to increase impact through reflecting on their current programming; and will integrate learning theory into educational program development for one of their current or future programs.

SESSION DATES: January 25 – February 22, 2021 

COST: $195 AASLH Members / $295 Nonmembers

Workshop Logistics

FORMAT: Online, instructor-led, weekly-paced workshop

LENGTH: 4 weeks

PARTICIPATION STYLE: Readings, activities, 2-hour weekly discussions to be held via Zoom on Fridays. 

MATERIALS: Workshop materials will be provided upon registration.

Who Should Attend This Workshop

This workshop is ideally suited for staff (first-time museum educators, directors, tour guides or volunteer managers and mid-career professionals), museum studies students, or dedicated volunteers working in all types of museums who are given the responsibility of education and public programming.

Stacia Kuceyeski is the Director of Outreach at the Ohio History Connection. In this position she gets to stay engaged in a variety of areas including equity and justice work, community engagement, field services, American Indian relations, and K-12 learning. The best days are when all these areas overlap in both expected and unexpected ways, which, thankfully, happens often. Stacia earned her B.A. in History and her M.A. in Cultural Policy and Arts Administration, both from The Ohio State University.

Megan Wood is the Director of the Cultural Resources Division for the Ohio History Connection. The Cultural Resources Division is responsible for the Ohio History Connection’s system of 58 historic sites, 1.8 million collection items, and all exhibitions across the sites. Megan obtained a B.A. in Public History from Western Michigan University and a M.A. in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program. Most of her career has focused on education and learning in museums. She has worked on programs and projects including National History Day in Ohio, 1950s: Building the American Dream exhibit at the Ohio History Center, and the recent expansion of the Armstrong Air & Space Museum. Megan is an active member of the American Association for State and Local History and the American Alliance of Museums.

Week 4: The Future of Learning

As a reminder, your assignment is to create a program, no more than five minutes, for the audience and topic you were given. Use something from your institution (exhibit, artifact, primary source story) and create an activity that relates to the topic for the audience you were assigned. This is supposed to be a quick, creative exercise, so you should spend less than an hour putting the entire thing together. You can film yourself on your phone, using Zoom, or whichever method works best. If you are unable to film yourself, please submit a detailed outline of the program. Cancellation/Refunds for onsite workshops must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the early-bird registration deadline date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.

Cancellations/Refunds for online professional development (webinars, online courses, and online workshops) must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the start date for the online course/online workshop or the day of the webinar will be given a full refund. No refund will be given after the start date for the online course/online workshop or on/after the day of the webinar. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person. Registrations cannot be transferred between online courses/online workshops or online courses/online workshops sessions. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
