Session Description
Rebels, Revisionists, and Visionaries is a recorded session of the 2020 AASLH Online Annual Meeting.
Each of the organizations represented attacked how best to approach dynamic narrative change in often hostile environments or in the midst of communities in crisis. Whether through mergers, major reorganizations or strategic realignment, each has reinvented their organizations from the inside out to stunning success... and consistent evaluation.

Speakers
Chair: Stephanie Arduini American Civil War Museum, Richmond, VA
Stephanie Fitzwater Arduini is the American Civil War Museum’s Deputy Director and Director of its Edward L. Ayers Center for Civil War and Emancipation Studies (education, programs, exhibits, and collections), whose projects that tell more complicated, inclusive, and relevant stories of the Civil War and its legacies. She has an M.A. from George Washington University and B.A. from University of Michigan.
Katie Blount Mississippi Department of Archives and History, Jackson, MS
Katie Blount became director of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History February 1, 2015. Blount began her career at MDAH in 1994 and was part of the team that planned the new Museum of Mississippi History and the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum (opened in 2017). She earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan and her M.A. from the University of Mississippi.
Kevin Maijala Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, MN
Kevin Maijala is the Josephine (Nicky) Benz Carpenter Chair for Education and Deputy Director for Learning Initiatives at the Minnesota Historical Society. He oversees program development, K-16 programs, MNHS Press, and 26 historic sites across the state, such as making the interpretation more inclusive at Historic Fort Snelling.
Sara Phalen, J.D. West Chicago City Museum and Warrenville Historical Society, West Chicago, IL
Sara Phalen, J.D., is the Director/Curator of the West Chicago City Museum and the Warrenville Historical Society, leading equity in local history initiatives and advocating for small museums for the past 14 years. She is currently the President of the Kane DuPage Regional Museum Association.

Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
Cancellations/Refunds for online continuing education (webinars and online courses) must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the start date for the online course or the day of the webinar will be given a full refund. No refund will be given after the start date for the online course or on/after the day of the webinar. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person. Registrations cannot be transferred between courses or course sessions. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
