The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unprecedented crisis in our local communities, country, and world. Many are seeking answers and guidance during this time, and AASLH has been listening to the concerns from the history community. In response, we are offering more online content including the new AASLH Conversations webinar series. While no one has all the answers, we hope these topic-focused conversations will provide a space to share ideas to help us all keep moving forward.
We know many organizations are facing financial strain due to the pandemic, so we developed AASLH Conversations with that in mind. We have drastically reduced the registration fee and are also providing a special promo code to waive the registration fee completely.

In this "AASLH Conversation," Erin Carlson Mast (President Lincoln's Cottage), David Janssen (Brucemore), and Kara Newport (Filoli Historic House & Garden) will lead a discussion about the unique challenges the coronavirus pandemic poses for historic sites across the country. From the perspective of three different institutions, they will offer ideas about how historic sites can best fulfill their missions, support their staff and volunteers, and serve their communities during our present circumstances and uncertain future.

Erin Carlson Mast
President and CEO
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation
Erin Carlson Mast joined the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation as its new President and CEO in 2021. Prior to leading the Foundation, Mast was the CEO and Executive Director of President Lincoln’s Cottage, a National Monument and historic site in Washington, DC. As CEO, Mast built and led the organization through a phase of steady growth, groundbreaking scholarship and programming, unprecedented press and awards recognition, and transition to an independent, 501(c)(3) non profit. Under her leadership, President Lincoln’s Cottage was recognized as one of the 50 Great Places to Work in Washington, DC, Best Museum off the Mall four years in a row, and received a Presidential Medal. In 2017, Mast received the EXCEL Award for Chief Executive Leadership from the Center for Nonprofit Advancement. Mast had previously served the organization in other leadership roles, including Curator & Site Administrator, and was an original member of the capital project team leading up to the grand opening in 2008. Mast's current board service includes Lincoln Forum and past board service includes AASLH. She has also contributed chapters to books including Reimagining Historic House Museums (2019), Mission Matters (2019), and AASLH Guide to Making Public History (2017). She is an alumna of Harvard University’s Strategic Perspectives in Nonprofit Management Program and the American Express Leadership Academy. She received her MA in Museum Studies from The George Washington University in Washington, DC, and BA in History from the Ohio University Honors Tutorial College in Athens, Ohio.
Executive Director, Brucemore
David Janssen is the Executive Director of Brucemore, a museum property of the National Trust for Historic Preservation in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. His 25 years’ experience in museum and historic site leadership includes serving as Vice President of the Detroit Historical Society, Vice President of Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, and Curator of the Smith-McDowell House Museum in Asheville, North Carolina. He earned a BA in history from Dartmouth College, an MA in history from Duquesne University, and an MBA from the University of Iowa.
Kara Newport is the CEO for Filoli and has an extensive history in working with a variety of cultural organizations. Kara has been with Filoli for over three years and in that short time has increased attendance by an unprecedented 75% and revenue by over 30%. After completing her master’s degree (MPA), she was a senior development professional including work at Winterthur, The Philadelphia Zoo, The Franklin Institute and was also the Executive Director for Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden for 10 years. Kara has served on both local and national boards, including Treasurer of the American Public Gardens Association National Board.
Cancellation/Refunds for onsite workshops must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the early-bird registration deadline date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
Cancellations/Refunds for online continuing education (webinars and online courses) must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the start date for the online course or the day of the webinar will be given a full refund. No refund will be given after the start date for the online course or on/after the day of the webinar. Registrants may transfer their registration to another person. Registrations cannot be transferred between courses or course sessions. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
