Deaccessioning: The Devil's in the Details is an AASLH Continuing Education recorded webinar. This webinar is about deaccessioning including what a deaccessioning policy should cover and how to avoid getting into deep deaccession trouble. This event is presented by Ellen Endslow. When it comes to removing accessioned items from your museum’s collection, the devil is definitely in the details. A policy that addresses the disposal, trade, or sale of any collection item is an essential document for every museum, historic house or other collecting organization. Paid and unpaid staff plus committee and board members need to be well-informed of your organization’s deaccession policy.

In this webinar, Ellen Endslow, Director of Collections/Curator for the Chester County Historical Society, West Chester, Pennsylvania, addresses important points about deaccessioning including what a deaccessioning policy should cover and how to avoid getting into deep deaccession trouble. Paid and unpaid staff and board members from organizations of all sizes, especially smaller ones, will benefit from this lab. Participants enrolled in AASLH’s StEPs program will benefit from Ellen’s comments on how they can meet the deaccessioning-related performance indicators in the StEPs workbook.

This webinar is part of the StEPs Lab series of continuing education offered to both StEPs program participants and all others interested in collections management. This is StEPs Lab 1.

Applying what you learn in a Lab to your policies and practices helps your organization make meaningful progress. The more progress you make, the more boxes you can check off in the StEPs workbook. The more boxes you check off, the more Bronze, Silver, and Gold certificates your organization earns. And that translates into more credibility, more support, and an organization that is a valuable asset to its community for many more years to come.
