A Different Path for Historic Walking Tours is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #194 by Ron Thomson focuses on incorporating social history into tours to help make the history relevant and to make emotional connections with visitors. Walking tours often follow the same formula: a date, the person who lived in a structure or built it, and some architectural detail. Ron Thomson challenges this typical narration with helpful guidelines for ways to enliven walking tour brochures. Each of the 11 points for improving walking tours are supported with examples of similar tours from all over the country. Also included are three case studies of towns that have excellent walking tours: Seneca Falls, New York, Jamestown, Virginia, and Nashville's City Walk in Tennessee.
