Explosive Ordnance Safety is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #201 by Barbara Windle Moe provides a primer on dealing with obviously, and sometimes inconspicuously, dangerous explosive artifacts such as flares, Civil War cannonballs, and mines. Numerous seemingly unsuspicious ordnances find their way into museum collections. She explains the dangers of artifacts that have not been examined and provides steps for examining potentially explosive objects. Guidelines cover how to address official inspections from professionals who can claim objects inert or dispose of them properly, how to inventory potentially dangerous objects, and the need for regular re-inspections and tracking tools.
