Digitizing Your Collection is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #217 by Jill Marie Koelling weighs the pros and cons of the questions every organization must ask when embarking on a digitization project. Koelling lists the equipment necessary to complete the task of digitizing a collection, with particular emphasis on photography, and explains what to look for when purchasing each piece of equipment. Though the quality of technology and resources have changed since 2001, the discussion of establishing benchmarks in a digitization project still remains relevant today. Koelling explains the importance of establishing benchmarks before starting a project that determine the acceptable quality of the digital image produced (resolution, color, file formats and so forth). Considering the questions Koelling poses for each step of the process will help professionals create a manageable plan for a digitization project.
