Families First! Rethinking Exhibits to Engage All Ages is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #245 by Anne Grimes Rand, Executive Vice President; Robert Kiihne, Director of Exhibits; and Sarah Watkins, Curator USS Constitution Museum tackles the low-cost techniques the museum implemented with tips for applying these ideas in other institutions. The USS Constitution Museum in Boston recognized the opportunity to engage families with grade-school-age children. Understanding its target audience of families caused a shift in exhibit design at the museum. The result was the creation of a space with interactives that encouraged social interaction. Insights from Anne Grimes Rand, Executive Vice President, Robert Kiihne, Director of Exhibits, and Sarah Watkins, Curator, show how the USS Constitution Museum prototyped interactive exhibits for families with members of all ages.
