Creating Intergenerational Oral History Opportunities is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. Technical Leaflet #259 by Maren Levad and Aleah Vinick tackles intergenerational oral history programs for high school students and senior citizens. Linking students with people from older generations can create personal connections that make history more relatable. Oral history is one method for pairing students with older members of the community to create an educational and meaningful dialogue. In this Technical Leaflet, Maren Levad and Aleah Vinick of the Minnesota Historical Society share their insights about creating intergenerational oral history programs for high school students and senior citizens. Using their experiences from the Sharing Community Stories program at MHS, Levad and Vinick provide an overview of how to begin planning an intergenerational oral history program and how to create a timetable for the project. They also address the challenges of developing and implementing a program with helpful charts and questions that will help readers determine the feasibility of creating a similar program.
