Technical Leaflet #278 by Alli Rico tackles discusses the needs and concerns associated with deaccessioning items from a museum. Museum collections must be constantly re-evaluated to make sure they are supporting the institution's mission and interpretive goals, as well as meeting the needs of dynamic audiences. Removing objects from collections can involve issues of ownership, provenance, and property law, and should be undertaken thoughtfully and methodically with plenty of supporting documentation.
