Technical Leaflet 293: Interpreting Slavery with Children and Teens is an AASLH Technical Leaflet. AASLH Technical Leaflets are brief, practical guides on how to do history. 

This leaflet explains how sites can interpret the difficult history of American slavery with young visitors and school groups in ways that foster empathy and employ dialogue and engagement techniques. It also addresses the need for staff and training and support and understanding how race, identity, and historical trauma intersect.

Kristin L. Gallas has worked in museums for over twenty-five years and facilitates workshops on developing comprehensive and conscientious interpretation of slavery. She is the co-editor, with James DeWolf Perry, of Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites (Rowman & Littlefield, January 2015) and author of Interpreting Slavery with Children and Teens (Rowman & Littlefield, September 2021).
