Webinar Description

For many history museums and heritage organizations, the focus and effectiveness of the governing authority “makes or breaks” the organization’s functioning and progress towards mission impact, relevance, and sustainability. When a governing authority is working well, in partnership with staff leadership, it enables an organization’s ability to serve its communities, at the same time assuring its own organizational stability and future existence. If it is not working well, it can be an exercise in frustration for individual governing members and staff leaders, because it is difficult to get much of anything done, let alone grow and develop the organization or fulfill the organization’s purpose.

What is the staff leader’s responsibility for educating, supporting, and facilitating the governing authority’s work? We’ll explore Four Lessons that are key to building mutual trust and respect between staff and governing authority leaders.

Connecting the Content

This webinar will especially help organizations enrolled in STEPS address multiple standards under the Governance section of the STEPS program.

The Standards and Excellence Program for History Organizations (STEPS) from AASLH is a self-study, self-paced assessment tool designed specifically for small- to mid-sized history organizations, including volunteer-run institutions. Through a workbook, online resources, and an online community, organizations enrolled in STEPS review their policies and practices and benchmark themselves against national standards.
