Workshop Description
Do you have clothing and/or textiles in your museum collection? Do you want to learn more about storing and displaying these items safely to prolong their lifespans, and understand more about their dates and constructions? This two-day workshop will focus on the care and conservation of textiles in museum collections, including storage, exhibiting, identifying unknown dates and materials, and more. Spend time working with an expert to learn how to be a better steward of your textile collection.

Participant Outcomes
As a result of this workshop, participants will:
- Gain general knowledge of the basic types of costumes and textiles common in American museum collections.
- Gain general knowledge of the particular needs of costume and textile collections including proper identification, handling, and basic conservation.
- Become familiar with some of the current issues and trends in the preservation of costume and textile collections.
- Explore the variety of issues related to exhibiting and storing costume and textile collections.
- Become familiar with simple conservation procedures that are safe to perform on their costume and textile collections.
- Be aware of when they should call a professional conservator for problems with their costume and textile collections.
Karen DePauw
Steep Rock Association, Inc.
Karen DePauw serves as Development Officer for Steep Rock Association, Inc. and was previously Executive Director of the Sharon Historical Society and Museum in Connecticut. She earned a BA in history and an MS in historic costumes and textile conservation, knowledge she has drawn upon for two publications: The Care and Display of Historic Clothing in 2017 with Rowman and Littlefield Publishers and The House of Worth: Fashion Sketches 1916-1918 in 2015 with Dover Publications. She previously worked in the field services department at the Indiana Historical Society providing educational workshops to small museums throughout Indiana, and with the costume and textile collection at the Connecticut Historical Society.

Cancellation/Refunds for onsite workshops must be submitted in writing via email or mail. Cancellations made prior to the early-bird registration deadline date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made between the early-bird deadline date and eight days prior to the workshop will be subject to a $55 processing/materials charge. No refunds will be given within seven days of the workshop date. AASLH is not responsible for cancellations that were mailed or emailed but never received.
