    Norman Burns, President and CEO of Conner Prairie Museum in Fishers, Indiana, has been actively involved in museum administration and entrepreneurial leadership, fund raising, preservation, conservation, education, and cultural heritage tourism for over 34 years. As the CEO and Executive Director of six different historic properties and general museums in Tennessee, Virginia and Indiana, he has successfully developed nationally recognized-award winning programs, and created innovative approaches and compelling visions for operating history and general museums. Burns has served on various boards and committees for local, state, regional, and national cultural organizations including  AAM Accreditation and MAP programs, and is the Chair for the American Association for State and Local History.

    John Dichtl became AASLH President & CEO in 2015. Prior to that he was the executive director of the National Council on Public History (NCPH) for nine years, and worked for the Organization of American Historians for fourteen years as deputy director and in several other roles. John received his MA and PhD in early American history from Indiana University, and from 2006 to 2015 was an adjunct faculty member of the history department at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. Before graduate school he worked for the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. He is a 2004 graduate of the Seminar for Historical Administration, a program that stems from an AASLH partnership with the Indiana Historical Society and other organizations. John helped to found the History Relevance Campaign, the International Federation for Public History, and is active in the National Coalition for History.

    Dina Bailey

    Secretary, American Association for State and Local History (AASLH)

    CEO, Mountain Top Vision

    Dina Bailey is the CEO of Mountain Top Vision, a consulting company that works with organizations on trainings and strategic initiatives that support more inclusive communities. She has been the Director of Methodology and Practice for the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience, the inaugural Director of Educational Strategies at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and the Director of Museum Experiences at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and a high school English teacher at Pike High School. Dina holds a Bachelors in Middle and Secondary Education, a Masters in Anthropology of Development and Social Transformation, and a graduate certificate in Museum Studies. She has been an adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University and has been published in both the formal education and museum fields. Dina is proud to be the Secretary of the American Association for State and Local History, the Board Chair of Next Generation Men and Women, and the Chair-Elect of the American Alliance of Museums’ Education Committee.

    Rebekah Beaulieu, Ph.D. is the Louise Taft Semple President & CEO of the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinnati, Ohio. She previously served as Director of the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Connecticut and as Associate Director at the Bowdoin College Museum of Art. She serves as Treasurer of AASLH and on the faculty of AASLH’s History Leadership Institute. Becky is also an Accreditation Commissioner for the American Alliance of Museums.

    Becky is the author of Financial Fundamentals for Historic House Museums (Rowman & Littlefield, 2017 and of Endowment Essentials for Museums (2022). She holds an M.A in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and in Arts Administration from Columbia University; she earned her Ph.D. in American and New England Studies at Boston University.

    AASLH Statement of Standards and Ethics

    The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) is a membership organization comprised of individuals, agencies, and organizations acting in the public trust, engaged in the practice of history, and representing many disciplines and professions. AASLH expects its members, employees, and elected officials to abide by the ethical and performance standards adopted by all appropriate discipline-based and professional organizations. The association and its members are to comply with all laws, regulations, and applicable international conventions. The association and its members are expected to take affirmative steps to maintain their integrity so as to warrant public confidence. The ethical statements and related professional standards in this statement are provided for the guidance of all AASLH members and those in the field of history organizations.

The course explains strategies for accessibility for physical, hearing, sight, and a variety of “invisible” disabilities. By the end of this course participants should be able to identify and begin to address accessibility challenges at their own site.

The course explains strategies for accessibility for physical, hearing, sight, and a variety of “invisible” disabilities.     FORMAT: Online self-paced, broken into sections expected to be done over 5 weeks approximately 5-7 hours of work per week

    • Identify and define the basics of access for historic sites and organizations
    • Explain the importance of accessibility and awareness at historic sites and organizations
    • Begin to implement accessibility and universal design best practices at your site

    Katie Stringer Clary

    Coastal Carolina University

    Katie Stringer Clary, Ph.D., currently teaches history and public history at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. Since 2007, Clary has worked with museums in various capacities from docent to executive director. She is currently spending quarantine teaching Public History and Egyptian history frantically online, eating cake, and spending time with pets.

    Heather Bruegl

    Heather Bruegl, a member of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and first line descendant Stockbridge Munsee, is a graduate of Madonna University in Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in U.S. History. Inspired by a trip to Wounded Knee, South Dakota, a passion for Native American History was born. She has spoken for numerous groups including the University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin-Madison, College of the Menominee Nation, the Kenosha Civil War Museum, Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohicans, and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin. She has spoken at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for Indigenous Peoples Day 2017. Heather also opened up and spoke at the Women’s March Anniversary in Lansing, Michigan in January 2018. She also spoke at the first ever Indigenous Peoples March in Washington, DC in January of 2019. In the summer 2019 and virtually in 2020, she spoke at the Crazy Horse Memorial and Museum in Custer, South Dakota for their Talking Circle Series. 

    She has also become the ‘’accidental activist’’ and speaks to different groups about intergenerational racism and trauma and helps to bring awareness to our environment, the fight for clean water and other issues in the Native community. A curiosity of her own heritage lead her to Wisconsin, where she has researched the history of the Native American tribes in the area. She served as the Director of Cultural Affairs for the Stockbridge Munsee Community in Bowler, Wisconsin, before recently becoming Director of Education for the Forge Project in Taghkanic, New York. In addition to that she also currently travels and speaks on Native American history, including policy and activism.
